CORNYN, CLINTON TO ANNOUNCE SENATE INDIA CAUCUS

Press invite issued by Senator Cornyn’s Office to announce the creation of Senate India Caucus

U.S. Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) will formally announce the creation of the first-ever Senate caucus dedicated to relations between the United States and India on Thursday, April 29.

The Senate India Caucus will bring together Republicans and Democrats to strengthen the relationship between the U.S. and India and work toward common goals, including increasing trade and improving security in an age of global terror. Sens. Cornyn and Clinton will co-chair the caucus, which includes Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas). There are 31 total members of the Caucus.

“This bipartisan caucus will encourage further advances between the U.S. and India, one of our greatest allies and a nation that shares the deepest convictions of democratic freedom,” Sen. Cornyn said. “As the world’s two largest democracies, it is particularly important that we maintain a strong strategic relationship.”

For the announcement, Cornyn and Clinton will be joined by the Indian Ambassador to the U.S., Lalit Mansingh, and leaders of the Indo-American community from Texas and other parts of the United States.

Sen. Cornyn traveled to India on a nine-day trade mission in January where he met with the Indian ministers for Commerce and Industry, and discussed ways of promoting trade between the two nations. He is a member of the Congressional Oversight Group on Trade, which supervises and consults with the U.S. Trade Representative. He also serves on the President’s Export Council.
