3 August 2012. Press Trust of India. Washington, DC

The US Senate on Thursday confirmed on a voice vote career diplomat James Cunningham as the next American ambassador to Afghanistan.

His confirmation came as the Congress began a five-week summer break. However, the list does not include Richard Olson, the ambassador-designate to Pakistan.

The confirmation hearing for the two envoys were held early this week. Cunningham, who has been serving as deputy ambassador since June 2011, replaces veteran diplomat Ryan C. Crocker.

In May, Crocker said in he was quitting the demanding diplomatic slot for health reasons after a long career in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Kuwait and Lebanon.
